3. How the calculation works
The solar panel azimuth-angle calculator maps your panel's setting to a yield coefficient. Two inputs drive it: the azimuth (which way the panel faces) and the tilt angle (how steep it is). Four steps run every time you move the panel or a slider:
- Deviation from the optimum. The calculator computes how far the panel points away from the sun-facing direction: south on the northern hemisphere, north on the southern (e.g. Brazil). A panel aimed straight at that direction has a deviation of 0°.
- Coefficient from a PVGIS table. The deviation and the tilt index into a table of annual yields taken from PVGIS (the EU Joint Research Centre's irradiation database, SARAH2) for a representative location of your market. Values between the grid points are read with bilinear interpolation.
- Yield vs. optimum (%). The table is normalised so the best possible setting equals 100%. The big percentage on the panel is your annual yield relative to that optimum; the battery tile and the face dimming reflect the same number.
-
Production per kWp. Multiplying the percentage by the market's optimum
specific yield gives the annual energy in
kWh/kWp; the power field scales it to any installation size.
4. What to pay attention to
- It is an annual average. "Sun in the south" is a mental model for the direction of maximum yield over the whole year, not the sun's position at a given moment.
- East–West symmetry. The calculator treats east and west deviations the same; real installations can differ by a few percent (climate, morning temperature).
- Shading and face dimming are illustrative, tuned for readability, not a photometric ray-trace.
- Irradiation data is market-representative (PVGIS for a typical location: Poland for Central Europe, Sweden, Spain for the south, Brazil for the southern hemisphere), not your exact roof.
- This is a simplified estimate, not an offer. Confirm the real design in EasySolar.
5. Example calculation
For a Central-European location (Warsaw, PVGIS-SARAH2), at a fixed 35° tilt, the yield relative to the optimum is:
| Orientation (tilt 35°) | Yield vs. optimum | ≈ kWh per 1 kWp / year |
|---|---|---|
| South (optimum direction) | ≈ 99% | ≈ 1 040 |
| East / West | ≈ 78% | ≈ 820 |
| North | ≈ 51% | ≈ 535 |
| Flat (0° tilt, any direction) | ≈ 84% | ≈ 880 |
So turning a panel from south to east/west costs about a fifth of the yield; facing it
north nearly halves it. The best setting for this market is roughly
south, ~40° tilt (≈ 1 048 kWh per kWp per year, the 100%
reference). Switch the widget to ?lang=pt-BR to see the southern-hemisphere
case, where the optimum points north.
6. Simplified vs. full version
The calculator on this page is a simplified, illustrative model: it uses an average irradiation table for a whole market and treats east and west alike. It is built to give you an intuition for how orientation affects yield, not a final quote.
The full version is EasySolar, available after registration at web.easysolar-app.com. It designs the actual installation:
- PV layout on satellite and drone imagery of the real roof, with shading analysis,
- irradiation and the true azimuth/tilt for the exact address, not a market average,
- real equipment: panels, inverters and storage from manufacturer databases,
- financial analysis with local tariffs and financing,
- and a complete interactive offer you can send to your client in minutes.
